Vapes vs. Prerolls: Which One Is Right for You? A Minnesota Buyer's Guide

May 4, 2026

The Core Difference: How They Work

Prerolls are exactly what they sound like — cannabis flower that's been ground, packed into a rolling paper, and sealed with a filter tip. You light one end, smoke from the other. It's the most traditional form of cannabis consumption, and the mechanics haven't changed. What has changed is the quality and variety available at licensed Minnesota dispensaries, where prerolls are made with lab-tested, state-licensed flower.

Vapes work through a process called vaporization. A battery-powered heating element — either in a cartridge system or a self-contained disposable device — heats cannabis oil to a temperature that converts active compounds into vapor without producing smoke from combustion. You inhale the vapor instead of smoke.

That distinction — vapor versus smoke — is the foundation of most of the practical differences between the two.

Smoke vs. Vapor: What It Means in Practice

Smoking a preroll produces visible smoke, a noticeable smell, and ash. This isn't a flaw — it's just the nature of combustion. For many consumers, the ritual of lighting up, the aroma of quality flower, and the tactile experience of a joint are part of the appeal. It's a sensory experience in its own right.

Vaping produces far less visible output and dissipates quickly. The smell is present but significantly reduced compared to smoke, and it doesn't linger on fabric or in enclosed spaces the way combustion does. For consumers concerned about discretion — in an apartment building, around non-consumers, or in situations where drawing attention to cannabis use isn't ideal — a vape offers a noticeably lower profile.

Neither is "better" in an absolute sense. Your preference for one over the other will likely depend on your lifestyle and where you typically consume.

Understanding Vapes: Cartridges vs. Disposables

If you're new to vapes, there are two main formats worth knowing.

Cartridge vapes consist of a pre-filled oil cartridge that attaches to a rechargeable battery (commonly called a "510-thread" battery, named for the universal connector standard). You buy the cartridge and battery separately, though batteries are a one-time purchase. Cartridges are typically available in 500mg or 1000mg sizes and can be swapped out as you finish them. This format is cost-effective over time and gives you flexibility to try different cartridges without replacing the whole device.

Disposable vapes are self-contained devices with a battery and oil chamber built in. You use it until it's empty, then responsibly dispose of the unit. No charging required (though some higher-end disposables are rechargeable to prevent the battery dying before the oil runs out). Disposables are ideal if you want zero setup, don't want to carry a separate battery, or are trying vaping for the first time before committing to a cartridge-and-battery setup.

What's in vape oil? Most vape products fall into two broad categories: distillate and live resin (or full-spectrum extract). Distillate is a highly refined oil with high THC potency but fewer of the minor cannabinoids and terpenes present in raw flower. Live resin oil is extracted from freshly frozen cannabis plants and retains more of the plant's original terpene profile, which many consumers feel produces a more nuanced effect. Live resin vapes typically cost more but are preferred by experienced consumers who want flavor and a fuller experience.

Understanding Prerolls: Singles, Infused, and Packs

The preroll category has expanded significantly since Minnesota's legal market launched. What was once a simple category — a joint — now includes several distinct formats.

Standard prerolls are made from ground flower, typically in .5g or 1g sizes. Quality varies depending on the brand and what flower is used. The best prerolls use whole flower (not shake or trim) and are rolled evenly so they burn consistently without canoeing.

Infused prerolls are becoming increasingly popular. These are prerolls that have been enhanced with a concentrated cannabis product — often hash, kief, or live resin — either mixed into the flower, rolled in concentrate on the outside, or coated in a combination of both. Infused prerolls are significantly more potent than standard prerolls and are better suited for experienced consumers with a higher tolerance. They're also more expensive, typically ranging from $15–$30 per unit depending on size and what they're infused with.

Multipacks offer a more economical way to buy prerolls if you consume regularly. A 5-pack of .5g prerolls, for example, often costs less per gram than buying five individual prerolls. Great if you've found a brand or strain you enjoy.

Minis and half-grams are worth knowing about if you're newer to smoking or prefer a shorter session. A half-gram preroll burns in 10–15 minutes and is plenty for most consumers, especially if tolerance is lower.

Onset Time and Duration

Both vapes and prerolls offer relatively fast onset compared to edibles — you'll generally feel effects within minutes. But there are some nuances worth understanding.

Vapes tend to deliver effects within 2–5 minutes of inhalation. The onset is clean and predictable, and many consumers find vapes easier to dose incrementally — take a puff, wait a few minutes, assess how you feel, and decide whether to take another.

Prerolls have a similar onset window, but the experience of smoking a full joint is inherently more of a session. Once you light it, you're committed to that amount of time (unless you put it out and save the rest for later, which is perfectly fine). Effects typically peak within 20–30 minutes and can last 1–3 hours depending on the strain, the amount consumed, and your individual tolerance.

Neither format produces an effect that lasts as long as edibles, which can persist for 4–8 hours. If duration is a priority, edibles are worth exploring. If you want something you can control and turn off more easily, inhalation methods give you that flexibility.

Comparing Costs: What's Realistic at a Minnesota Dispensary

Prices vary by brand, potency, and product type, but here's a general sense of what you'll find in our Roseville dispensary and online menu.

Vape cartridges: Typically range from $30–$60 for a 1g cartridge, depending on the brand and extract type. Live resin and full-spectrum options sit at the higher end. A 510-thread battery, if you need one, usually runs $15–$25 as a one-time purchase.

Disposable vapes: Generally $25–$50 depending on size (most are .5g or 1g) and the quality of the oil inside.

Standard prerolls: Singles typically run $8–$18 for a .5g–1g unit. Multipacks can bring the per-unit cost down.

Infused prerolls: $15–$30+ per unit due to the additional concentrate.

For budget-conscious shoppers, standard prerolls offer excellent value and a genuine cannabis experience. For convenience and discretion, vapes justify the price premium for many consumers.

How to Choose Based on Your Situation

If you're new to cannabis inhalation: Start with a standard preroll or a disposable vape in a lower-potency formulation. Prerolls give you the most traditional experience with no setup, while disposable vapes offer maximum ease and discretion. Avoid infused prerolls until you have a better sense of your tolerance.

If you're an experienced consumer who values potency: Infused prerolls or live resin vape cartridges are where you'll find the ceiling. Infused prerolls can hit significantly harder than standard flower, and high-quality live resin carts offer a full-spectrum experience that distillate can't match.

If discretion is your top priority: Vapes win. Whether it's a disposable for occasional use or a cartridge setup you carry regularly, vapor dissipates far faster than smoke and the smell is dramatically reduced.

If you love the ritual: Prerolls. There's something about the act of lighting a joint, watching the cherry glow, and sharing a smoke (where legal and permitted) that vaping simply doesn't replicate. If that experience matters to you, no amount of convenience will replace it.

If you're trying to manage your budget: Standard prerolls offer the best gram-for-dollar value in most cases. A quality 1g preroll from a reputable Minnesota cultivator will typically run you less per gram than an equivalent amount of vape oil.

A Word on Minnesota-Specific Considerations

Minnesota's legal cannabis market is relatively young, and the product landscape continues to evolve. A few things worth knowing as you shop:

Lab-tested and licensed. All products at Frostbite are state-licensed and come with Certificates of Analysis (COAs) available for review.

This means the potency information on the label reflects actual lab testing — not marketing claims. You can review COAs for our products here.

Local cultivators. As Minnesota's cannabis industry matures, an increasing number of products are coming from local, in-state cultivators. We're proud to carry Minnesota-grown flower and locally produced prerolls where available. Ask our team if you want to specifically seek out local options.

Consumption is still restricted to private property. Even though cannabis is legal for adults in Minnesota, you can't consume it in public spaces, in vehicles, or in most rental properties without landlord permission. Keep this in mind wherever you're consuming, regardless of the format.
